Conservation Workshop of the Palace of Art

For parishes and families

If your church or your family has an icon, a cross or a felt that is in trouble, bring it to us before anyone tries to clean it.

Thursday afternoons

Every Thursday from 14:00 to 17:00 a conservator looks at objects brought to the courtyard door, free of charge. You leave with a written note of what is wrong and what can be done.

Please don’t, at home

  1. Don’t wipe an icon with water, vodka, onion or oil. Each of these has cost an icon its face.
  2. Don’t polish silver with toothpaste or ash. It takes off the gilding and the engraving with the tarnish.
  3. Don’t put a felt in the sun to kill the moth. Wrap it in a sheet and bring it in.
  4. Don’t glue a broken piece back. Keep every fragment in a labelled envelope.

What it costs

For parishes, the Körköm Foundation pays for the treatment: the parish pays only for transport. For families we ask for the cost of the materials, and nothing for the time. A small number of objects are taken each year, and the queue is about four months.

Bringing it in

Wrap the object in clean cotton, lay it flat in a box, and bring it to the courtyard entrance of the Palace of Art, Cathedral Street 4, Iyık Janyl. For anything large, call the Palace and we will come to you.
