Conservation Workshop of the Palace of Art

What we treat

The workshop looks after the Palace of Art’s 14,000 objects first. Our other work is for the parishes, the house-museums of the Körköm network and families.

01

Icons and panel paintings

Cleaning darkened varnish and soot from candles, laying down flaking paint and gold, mending split panels. We never repaint a face.

02

Church silver and brass

Chalices, crosses, censers and book covers. Many came out of the ground after 1992, where they were buried in 1937; we stop the corrosion and keep the story.

03

Felt and textiles

Shyrdak and ala-kiyiz felts, tush kiyiz embroideries and vestments. Moth is the enemy; we freeze, wash and support.

04

Saddlery, wood and bone

Saddles, bridles and inlaid boxes from the Palace’s Room 5 and from families.

05

Paper and photographs

Drawings by Yusup Ayyubov, letters, family albums and the Palace’s posters. Mould, tape and floods.
